- Molokini is a crescent-shaped islet in the 'Alalakeiki Channel about 3 miles off Maui's southwestern coast, the southern
  rim of an extinct volcanic crater (Hawaii DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources).
- Molokini Shoal Marine Life Conservation District since 1977: no fishing (except trolling in the outer subzone), no feeding
  fish, no taking sand, coral or rocks; anchoring is restricted to protect the reef (DLNR).
- The islet is a state seabird sanctuary; landing on it is prohibited (DLNR).
- The inner cove slopes to about 100 ft; the back wall drops beyond 200 ft. Currents outside the cove grow with afternoon winds (DLNR).
- More than 250 fish species recorded; green sea turtles are seldom seen at Molokini and are usually found at Turtle Town off Makena.
- Maui County has banned the sale, use and distribution of non-mineral sunscreens since 1 October 2022.
- Ride time: about 15 minutes from the Kihei Boat Ramp (operator listings); much longer from Ma'alaea Harbor.
